There’s something special about autumn in Tipperary.

The leaves begin to turn, the evenings draw in, and suddenly there’s nowhere you’d rather be than somewhere warm and welcoming, with a cup of tea in hand and a little time to slow down.

From beautiful countryside walks and historic castles to local markets, Halloween adventures and cosy afternoon tea, autumn is the perfect time to discover Tipperary.

And when the day’s adventures are over, the Horse & Jockey is the perfect place to come back to.

Here are five of our favourite ways to embrace the season.

1. 🍂 Wrap Up & Enjoy an Autumn Walk

Autumn was made for getting outdoors.

Luckily, you don't have to travel far from the Horse & Jockey to enjoy some beautiful Tipperary countryside. Wrap up warm, pull on your walking boots and explore Derrynaflan Lake and the Littleton Labyrinth, both close to the hotel.

Derrynaflan Lake is a lovely spot to enjoy a peaceful autumn stroll, with the changing colours of the season reflected across the water. It's the perfect place to get some fresh air, take in the countryside and enjoy a slower pace.

For something a little different, discover the Littleton Labyrinth. Take your time following the path, enjoy the surrounding landscape and embrace the simple pleasure of getting outside without needing to go too far.

The beauty of an autumn walk is that you don't need a packed itinerary. Just wrap up, head outside and enjoy the crisp air, golden leaves and peaceful Tipperary countryside.

And afterwards? Come back to the Horse & Jockey and warm up with something delicious from our bakery, enjoy a coffee or settle in for a cosy meal.

Sometimes the simplest days are the best ones.

2. 🏰 Take an Autumn Day Trip to Cahir

For a classic Tipperary day out, make your way to beautiful Cahir.

Explore the impressive Cahir Castle, wander along the river and take in the autumn colours on the surrounding walks. The town and its historic surroundings are particularly atmospheric at this time of year, when the trees are turning golden and the cooler weather makes a cosy café stop all the more inviting.

If you're feeling adventurous, explore the woodland paths towards the beautiful Swiss Cottage and enjoy a little taste of Tipperary's history and countryside in one day.

3. ☕ Slow Down with Afternoon Tea

Sometimes embracing autumn means doing absolutely nothing in a hurry.

Take a seat in our Courtyard Café, settle in with a pot of tea and watch the season unfold outside.

Watch the leaves blow across the courtyard on a crisp autumn afternoon, or listen to the rain coming down while you're warm and cosy inside. Add an abundance of tea, freshly made treats and our delicious Afternoon Tea, and you've got the perfect way to embrace the BER months.

Our Afternoon Tea is the perfect excuse to slow down, catch up with someone you love and enjoy the simple pleasures of the season.

Sometimes autumn adventures are best enjoyed from a comfortable chair.

4. 🎃 Get Into the Halloween Spirit

If you like your autumn with a little more excitement, Tipperary has plenty to keep the ghosts and ghouls entertained.

A Scare in Cahir

Head to Cahir on 24–25 October for A Scare in Cahir – Into the Wild, featuring a spooky woodland experience, Irish folklore, live performances, fire displays and plenty of Halloween atmosphere.

Spleodar in Nenagh

From 27–31 October 2026, Nenagh hosts the Spleodar Halloween Arts Festival, a brilliant family-friendly celebration filled with workshops, storytelling, parade and spectacle.

And don't forget Cashel...

Cashel's Screamland has become a popular Halloween attraction for those looking for something a little more frightening. Keep an eye on event announcements for this year's details if you're planning a spooky autumn break - Follow Le Cheile Cashel on social media for updates!

With Halloween events taking place throughout the county, Tipperary is a great destination for a fun-filled October getaway.

5. 🧀 Discover Tipperary's Autumn Markets

Autumn is the perfect season for food lovers.

It's the time of year for comforting flavours, seasonal harvests and discovering the wonderful produce made by local Irish producers. Think delicious cheeses, homemade jams and chutneys, fresh breads and plenty of treats to bring home.

For a Saturday morning browse, visit Market 54 in Thurles or Cahir Farmers Market and discover some of the fantastic produce available from local makers and producers.

Prefer to stay cosy?

You don't even have to brave the Irish weather!

Our Bakery Shop here at the Horse & Jockey has that wonderful market feeling, but with the added bonus of being warm and toasty.

Take your time browsing our selection of local products and discovering some of the amazing Irish producers we are proud to support. From freshly baked breads and pastries to delicious local produce, it's the perfect place to pick up a little taste of Tipperary to enjoy during your stay — or bring home with you.
